The Brown decision came in 1954, but Blacks who had been educated in segregated schools generationally since Reconstruction had already achieved 89.8% literacy by 1952. Black children had been nurtured by parents, pastors, and teachers and had received an excellent academic foundation that was also strongly spiritual.
